Slightly less overstable than the Firebird, the Innova FL has the same great speed and glide but with less hard fade towards the end.
The FL is a great disc to use if you’re looking for a slower driver that will still cover a lot of distance with low turn and high glide.
This Innova FL review will also go over the important features of a new disc, including the plastic options, weights, and best throws for the disc.
Overview of the Innova FL
The first thing that I noticed about the FL was how comfortable the plastic and rim felt in my hand. I’m a massive sidearm player, so any disc that feels good and can be thrown with a forehand is a benefit to me.
I did notice a similar flight and feel to the popular Firebird, but definitely more overall control. You won’t need a lot of arm speed for the FL, as I threw it softly a handful of times and still got some decent distance.

Innova FL Features
Plastic Types
You can find the Innova FL in only one plastic mold which is the Star FL.
- Star – Star plastic is one of the premium Innova plastics that’s known for being grippy, durable, and consistent. It has the same durability as the more expensive Champion plastic and will keep its shape in both cold and warm weather.

Available Weights
The FL can be found with a minimum weight of 160 grams and a maximum weight of 175 grams.
Best Throws for the Innova FL
For most players, the best throws for the Innova FL are:
- Tailwind
- Forehand
Tailwind – Tailwinds will work to assist and propel your disc forward since it will be moving in the same direction as the disc. Because the disc is pushed down towards the ground, this sort of wind causes the disc to be more overstable and have less glide.
Forehand – Discs that are great for sidearm throws are usually overstable and provide a lot of grip in the hand. Having a clean release and spin is key to a good forehand, and this disc has a wide enough rim to be able to generate a strong, powerful throw.
FL Stability and Turn
An overstable disc is a type of disc designed to resist turning over, or ‘hyzering out’, during flight. This makes them ideal for players with powerful throws, or for those who need to shape shots around obstacles.
There isn’t a huge amount for these flight characteristics, which really opens up the control and throwing options for the FL. It’s still hard to throw it straight, but you don’t have to worry about a massive skip or fade when the FL starts to slow down.
Which Players Should Use the Innova FL?
The average distance driver has speeds of 10 to 14, and they require a lot of power to complete the disc’s entire flight. They are usually flat on top and have wider rims that let the plastic edge cut through the air and keep flying and gliding.
These are the major benefits of using a distance driver:
- Getting closer to the basket on long distance holes
- Designed with more speed, glide, and flexibility in shot types
For disc golfers with some prior expertise and practice, intermediate discs are ideal. These discs may be thrown by beginners or newer players, but they’ll require a lot of effort to achieve considerable distance.
Where Can You Find the Innova FL?
As an experienced player, my preferred place to look for certain disc golf discs like the FL is at any local disc golf shop in my state. If I can’t find the disc in-store, there are two online shops that I always prefer to shop at.
They have plenty of disc options and show unique images of each individual disc that you can sort through, look at, and buy.

Innova Firebird – An overstable driver that works well for flex shots and throwing into the wind.

Final Review
The FL is an Innova driver that’s a slower and less overstable version of the Innova Firebird. Even with a hard hyzer throw, you’ll notice the FL won’t turn or fade back quite as much.
My favorite feature for the FL is the comfortable grip and rim, allowing me to rip forehand drives and watch the consistent flight and glide down the fairway.
