An understable driver from Innova, the Vulcan works exceptionally well at reaching far distances for players without as much arm speed. It can take some touch to get the disc in control, which is why beginners might struggle at first with flipping this driver.
Even though it can be tough to control, I enjoy throwing a lightweight Vulcan for rollers and huge drives with very little fade.

Who Is the Innova Vulcan For?
Distance drivers are discs with sharp and flat rims that can fly farther than any other type of disc but require more power and technique. The Innova Vulcan is one of the faster drivers with pretty average rim dimensions.
These are the major benefits of using a distance driver:
- Getting closer to the basket on long distance holes
- Designed with more speed, glide, and flexibility in shot types
For disc golfers with some prior expertise and practice, Intermediate discs are ideal. These discs may be thrown by beginners, but they’ll require a lot of effort to achieve considerable distance.
Since the Vulcan is very understable I would recommend new disc golfers should wait a while to try this one out.
When Should You Throw the Vulcan?
The best throws for the Innova Vulcan are:
- Distance
- Roller
Distance – This type of disc will help you to reach your maximum distance off the tee. A high speed and glide number are two important factors to look for when increasing how far you can throw the disc. There are a variety of shots that you can throw with the understable Vulcan that results in more overall distance.
Roller – This disc is great for throws where the majority of the distance is gained by rolling the disc on the ground rather than flying through the air. The stability of this disc allows even newer players to release it at a sharp angle that will roll and reach far distances.
The stability of the disc is one of the biggest factors in determining how a disc will fly once it’s released.
Understable discs are significantly more speed sensitive than stable or overstable ones. An understable disc will often fly level to overstable at low speeds. Newcomers frequently throw discs at slower speeds which causes them to be more stable.
Vulcan Plastics
The Vulcan can be found in all of the following plastic grades:
- Star
- GStar
- Pro
- Blizzard
- Champion
Star – Star plastic is one of the premium Innova plastics that’s known for being grippy, durable, and consistent. It has the same durability as the more expensive Champion plastic and will keep its shape in both cold and warm weather.
GStar – GStar is a softer and less stable premium plastic than other high-end materials. It’s comparable to Star or Champion plastic that has been used and beaten in before. One great advantage of GStar plastic is that it will retain its form and flight path for longer than DX or Pro discs.
Pro – The Innova Pro line is made with a higher grade of plastic than their basic mold, ensuring longer life and better performance. When comparing the durability of pro versus DX plastic, the Pro Line discs are more durable. The Pro Line discs glide farther and are less expensive than premium Champion or Star Line discs.
Blizzard – Blizzard plastic is a mix between the original Champion plastic and micro air bubbles. Adding more air inside the rim causes the disc to have the same durability while cutting down on the total weight. These lighter discs are great for newer players who want to get the same flight and distance as a heavier disc.
Champion – For hundreds of rounds of disc golf, Champion Line discs retain their original flight characteristics. The DX, Pro, or Star version is sturdier than the Champion Line model because of its stronger plastic.
Vulcan Weights
The Vulcan can be found with a minimum weight of 130 grams and a maximum weight of 175 grams. Most of the distance drivers from Innova are within that range with a maximum weight of 175.
Pros of the Innova Vulcan
- One of the better roller discs that you can find.
- Players with less arm speed can still throw it for good distances.
- The Vulcan is relatively thin and does well at cutting through any wind.
